The Best Jeans for Petite Figures

by Jaime on March 1, 2012

In honor of today’s guest post over at Alterations Needed, I thought I’d kick off the new month with a new series!

Top Denim Tips for… Petite Figures

Look for cropped styles (like the MiH jeans at left) because they’re a no-muss, no-fuss solution to the hemming problem. Remember that styles come with different inseams (find out how to measure yours!) so your perfect cut may differ from someone else’s. Brands with a great cropped style: Paige Denim (Verdugo Capri or Kylie Crop), J Brand (the Low Rise Cropped) and 7 For All Mankind (Crop and Roll).

My personal favorite cropped pair? Siwy Hannah Cropped Jean.

If you want to go for a petite jean: our tried-and-true best petite pairs come from a few different brands: Joe’s Jeans has the flattering Provocateur cut, with a higher knee break and shorter inseam. 7 For All Mankind’s Lexie Petite is a great solution when you want the petite counterpart to a favorite 7 style, and I am always a fan of James Jeans’ petite styles.

Avoid higher waist styles or heavy prints.

Certain washes can provide the illusion of height. Look for a darker overall blue and a lighter fade on the front of the thigh; it will draw eyes up and make you look taller and slimmer. 7 For All Mankind did this really well with their Aggressive Siren wash on the Kaylie cut.

Stay away from bell bottoms or wider flared cuts, especially if you’re hemming off more than three inches. The jeans you end up with will not be the same ones you bought.

What tips would you share when it comes to petite sizing?

Came here from Alterations Needed–LOVE your posts. So informative and great to keep in mind next time I have to make that dreaded denim-buying excursion–I have a ridiculously short 25″ inseam so your advice is great!

Agree with Siwy Hannah crops! The ankle taper bugs me a little but they’re great for tucking into boots. I also like the “skinny ankle bell” styles but have yet to find some for the price I’m willing to pay :)

I have recently bought a few pairs of denim leggings and absolutely love the fit. I am LOVING the AG “The Tight” legging (Revolve Clothing and Shopbop), the AG Super Skinny Fit Legging, and Current/Elliott Pull Up Legging (Yoox). Other pairs I’d love to try are the AG Super Skinny Ankle Leggings (they have a 28″ inseam!) and the AG Ballad Slim Boot Cut. I also do not shy away from bell bottoms and flares, as long as they are not extremely wide. As long as they are very fitted through the hips and thighs, I can usually pull them off without looking ridiculous.

i’m 5’2″ with a 28″ inseam and it’s been nearly impossible for me to find jeans to fit my height without alterations for years! i recently came across Lotus Premium Denim that offers 28″ inseams! these jeans fit me perfectly and i don’t have to alter them at all! for women 5’5″ and under i would definitely suggest these jeans. they not only are the perfect length, they fit like a glove! check them out…
