Current/Elliott Sizing – Paula’s Denim Experiment

by Jaime on May 5, 2011

I know this is really hard to believe, but I have a generous amount of Current/Elliott jeans. Now, as anyone who has tried C/E knows, the sizing can be hard to figure out… two sizes down from your true size? Once size down? True size? Oh, help.

My first venture into the brand was a pair of  Current/Elliott skinny jeans two sizes down from my true size. To be honest, this pair remains one of the best snug fitting jeans I own and probably ever will own. However, as I acquired more C/E in various cuts and sizes – BFs, slouchy, trouser, belles, more skinnies – I began to wonder about Emily and Meritts true intent as to sizing and fit. I began to formulate the theory that maybe – just maybe they weren’t so crazy with their sizing choices after all.

You see, the one size in C/E I had not tried was my True Size. I had purchased and worn items one size down, two sizes down, even one size up (well, they were cheap…), but never my actual True Size.

So of course, being somewhat obsessed with denim, I yearned to put my theory to the test – an experiment as it were. And while I am sure my time could be put to much better use (although nothing at present comes to mind), my chance finally presented itself. Just to sweeten the deal (as if the $34 price tag from was not enough!!) this particular C/E jean just happened to be a long desired, but ever illusive item.

Ok – so here is how it went:

Hypothesis: Emily Current and Merrill Elliott intend their denim to hang on the body in such a way as can only be achieved by wearing ones True Size.

Test Case: Current/Elliott – The Skinny Denim in Natural Destroy – True Size

Observations: When it comes to my C/E, I am all about equal opportunity and I don’t discriminate on the grounds of sizing. However, I did LOVE how the True Size skinnys felt on my body – like, in a rebelliously cool way. I am also sure that the looser C/E Boyfriend and Trouser cuts in my True Size (lacking the hips to hold them up) will require a belt lest they end up around my ankles before I am out the door. Nonetheless, I foresee a pair of True Size Boyfriends in my future –with belt – and fully expect to achieve the same perfect tactile phenomenon.

I am indeed obsessed with denim.
I spend waaaay too much time thinking about denim.
And, Emily Current and Merritt Elliott actually DO know what they are doing…in a big way – go figure!

I want more Current/Elliott jeans… I only got my first pair last month and I effing love it. I’m 90% sure I wore that pair every day for the first week I got it.

They look really awesome on you, Paula! You should one day just take a picture of every pair C/E you have, just stacked up next to one of your kids for height comparison :D

Believe it or not they are from Target (xhilaration). Gotta love target for those little finds. They were around $20 – $24 on sale if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the useful review! I’m completely new to premium denim but I’m eyeing a pair of Current/Elliott skinny jeans at the moment. At the risk of asking a silly question… which size should I start with if I don’t know my “true size”? I have a 23″ waist and 32″ full hip, so I’m guessing either 23 or 24. I’m used to buying high-street jeans labelled by dress size, hence the uncertainty.
