I’ve gotten many emails from women who are hoping to expand their guy’s denim horizons. As long as you’re coming from a place of love – and not trying to craft yourself a new man – there’s nothing wrong with adding a little bit to his wardrobe.
The trick to buying great jeans that your guy will wear (especially if he’s totally opposed to the idea of premium denim) is centered around what I like to call “guy logic”. It’s different than how we – myself included – normally think. They don’t see the point in dropping a huge chunk of money down for something that’s an afterthought, and they don’t want to look super trendy. Two problems, and here are the solutions:
1. Select basic blues – brands like Paper Denim & Cloth, Loomstate (if they’re still making them), Earnest Sewn, J Brand and, if he likes a slightly more “rugged” look, Stitch’s Jeans are a great option. Avoid brands like True Religion, Antik, MEK or anything with a flashy or flap back pocket.
2. Look for an affordable pair that’s easy to find. My first stops are generally sites like Overstock.com, SmartBargains.com, 6pm.com and sample sale sites. I also occasionally feature men’s denim on the site, so check around here for details. If you show him how much you paid (and conversely how much you saved with five minutes of work), it will change his thought process quickly.
Most guys can’t tell the difference between Levi’s and Evisu, Wrangler and Rock & Republic, and that’s okay. You’re not working to change him OR his style (unless it’s just dastardly and horrible), but enhance the look he’s already going for.
Have you gotten your man in premium denim? Did it take a fight, or did he jump right into the deep end? Share your experience in the comments!
Love,
JP

So far I have gotten my guy into two pairs of designer denim. His requirements were not too flashy and NOT expensive (no more than $30 if you can believe that!). I got him a pair of AGs for $30 from yoox.com and a pair of Yanuks for around $20 from overstock.com. (both thanks to DD.com)
It was easier than I expected when I showed him the great prices for Paper Denim & Cloth on Overstock.com, he ended up really liking them! I am hoping to broaden his denim collection, but I will have to find him similar deals to get him to jump on it
John yelled at me for spending a whopping $12 for a pair of Eddie Bauer jeans!
But he wears ‘em, with the caveat of me NEVER buying for him again. I saw some Lucky’s for $25 and I emailed him the link and he reminded me that I’m not allowed to buy any clothes for him.
If he only knew the fabulousness of great denim, but alas, he’d be happier with a 16 oz bison filet!
Do you have any advice for a fashion-clueless guy who wants to upgrade a little from plain old Levis? Preferably something with some decent quality that will last a while instead of some of the low-quality brands?
Mark, what’s the style you prefer? Do you wear basic 501s now?
