Behind the Blues Interview Series: Mary-Jo from Mercurios Jewels

by Jaime on May 4, 2010

Mary-Jo has a talent for making amazing, intriguing jewelry… and on top of that, she’s fun as heck to talk to. Here’s your chance to learn more about the woman behind the fantastic line! Enjoy the interview!

How did you start Mercurio Jewels and why?

Great question! MerCurios started out as a hobby; a way for me to express my creativity. In last 4 years, with help of my very supportive husband, MerCurios has grown from a hobby into a full-fledged business. After I became pregnant with my son in 2005, we decided that this would be my opportunity to take my “hobby” to the next level. Not easy running a business and being a full-time mom, but I’m making it work. Neither of us wanted to put Gabriel in daycare.

I actually need to create. There is a definite shift in my attitude between the days that I’m creating and they days where projects are at a stand-still. Everything is tied into my emotions. What can I say, I’m a Scorpio.

What is your favorite pair of jeans to wear on a night out – and what piece from your line would you pair them with??

Believe it of not, my favorite pair of jeans are a pair of straight leg Kenneth Cole jeans I picked up at sample sale for $5. Yes, $5! I was working for Liz Claiborne and Kenneth Cole is under their Designer Umbrella. That was over 10 years ago and they are still like new! I wear a lot of jewelry. Lately, I’m wearing a two-finger ring on each hand and the Till Death skull & xo choker with a v-neck sleeveless top. I’ve never been much of an earring person. But it’s bracelets, rings & chokers all the way! One can never wear too many chunky bracelets. The rings I’m wearing are not on the site yet, they are that new! Here’s the choker I’ve been wearing… and the bracelets I’ve been wearing lately are also new!

My blue tattoo jeans are my second favorite. They used to have a koi fish down the back leg which has since faded over time & with washing — this was way before the tattoo phenomenon swept the nation with Christian Audiger.

Lastly, skinny jeans are in and a girl needs those too, so I bought two pair at Forever 21 for $20 a pop! For something that’s going to be out of style in the blink of an eye, $20 is the right price tag.

… and your favorite pair of jeans overall?

My favorite pair overall has got to be the Forever 21 skinny jeans. I’ve been wearing them a lot lately & they provide fashion with the right amount of comfort for a mom whose in the playground and running around with a 4 yr old boy. Besides, if I ruin them, they were $20 so who cares!

What about your dream pair?

Hmm, my dream pair? Honestly, to find those Kenneth Cole jeans again. I love them & they fit me like nothing else has. Alas, they changed their cuts and I don’t even have a style #.

What was your first pair of designer denim (if you remember)?

My 1st pair of designer denim? I honestly don’t remember. I do remember as kid getting Lee Flavors and being thrilled, because that’s what all the kids in school were wearing! …Lee Flavors = colored denim. I was 13. ; ) & this was Queens, NY.

If you had one personal tip for DD readers, what would it be?

Personal tip? hmmm. A good pair of denim will last you a lifetime. The fit and comfort is more important than the price tag — my $5 Kenneth Cole jeans is proof of that.
