There aren’t enough sites out there like tobi, and there certainly aren’t enough people who are as fun and helpful as Marisa! She’s graciously decided to take part in our interview series, and I know that you’ll all be totally blown away with her knowledge and great taste. Enjoy the interview!
You’ve been at Tobi for a while now, and you guys are known for having great denim. How did you end up there, and what’s your favorite part of the job?
I’ve been working with and at Tobi for almost two years — I had interned there during the summer of 2007 (before my last semester of college) which was a really exciting time as we were rolling out the new, improved Tobi interface. My favorite part of the job? Is it too cliché to say, “the clothes”? Every time we get a new collection in – it renews my love for fashion and what designers are doing season after season. It makes handling the PR aspect of Tobi –getting in touch with editors and bloggers a fun way to connect about our shared interest.
Is there a denim brand that’s your favorite? How do you think they did it right?
Really depends on the look I’m going for — DL1961 Premium Denim jeans fit ahhh-mazingly, love the DL1961 Premium Denim Kate Straight Leg Jeans in Black Diamond
I currently have my eye on these Prps Japan Dart Skinny Jeans in Motor Cross Grey Stich jeans.
I think there are many denim brands that get it “right” — it all comes down to your individual preference on cut, rise, wash versus body type. Personally, I’ve always had a hard time finding jeans that fit my average-sized hips, 5’9″ height, and my “chicken legs.” For this reason, I absolutely adore J Brand, Blank Denim, Cheap Monday, DL1961, and 7 For All Mankind.
… and what is your favorite pair of jeans – for you – overall?
Go-to denim? J Brand. I have at least 2 or 3 pairs of just this pair:
What was your first pair of designer denim (if you remember)?
Funnily enough, I’m wearing my first pair of designer denim as I answer this! First pair = Joe’s Jeans in Cigarette style, medium wash.
What do you think will be the next big trend in denim for 2010?
I think one of the bigger trends for Fall is a paired down boyfriend fit. There’s definitely a slouch to it but it’s also more streamlined/less roomy in the leg. We’re also seeing lots of tailored looks –denim trousers with pleats.(on our site)!
What is your dream pair of denim (if it exists, share that. If not, tell us what it would look like)?
I think my dream pair right now are those Prps Japan jeans I mentioned above. It features three things I’m looking for in my next pair: insanely good stitching, the color grey (and two shades, at that!), and clever patchwork detail (without infringing upon dangerous 1970s undertones). It’s an added plus that the jeans are stretch denim – guarantees an easy, flattering fit.
If you had one personal tip for DD readers, what would it be?
This may be an obvious one but — denim will never go out of fashion so consider it a lifetime/lifestyle investment piece. Always purchase based on your body and your personal style preference (wash, style, fit, cut). Don’t force fads – if skinny doesn’t work for you, trust me – you’ll look amazing in something else… bootcut, straight leg, whatever it may be. Accentuate what you have, that’s what’s so great about your go-to pair of jeans.
