Behind the Blues Interview Series: Lisa from Fantabulously Frugal

by Jaime on May 5, 2010

Lisa and I have a lot of really, REALLY strange things in common. For starters, we’ve both lived in Ann Arbor and Chicago and we both have impressively good taste (is that vain?). But Lisa’s got one heck of a talent for finding deals and making sure that you live the life you want (within the budget you have). So, here’s your chance to meet her and learn more!

How did you start Fantabulously Frugal, and why do your readers keep coming back?

I wish there was a good reason behind why I started Fantabulously Frugal, but the main reason I started it was because I was looking for a hobby to fill the time once I finished grad school.  I ran down the list of things that I was good at and it was woefully short.  The one thing at the top of the list was bargain hunting on the internet and – voila – Fantabulously Frugal was born early one Saturday morning.  The idea for the site literally came to me in the middle of the night and I woke up earlier than I’ve ever willingly been up on a Saturday to get it started.  As for why my readers keep coming back, well, I don’t know.  Maybe because I bribe them with giveaways?  :)   I hope they keep coming back because I write about deals that are accessible to all women.  Plus size or regular size, high-end designers or Target – you’re going to find a little bit of everything and it will all be women-based, meaning no deals on where to find the cheapest diapers or anything like that.

What’s your favorite denim style to wear when you’re going out, and how would you style them?

I just bought a pair of pre-rolled boyfriend jeans that first became stylish what, last Spring?  I’m so behind!  I cannot wait to start wearing them once it finally starts to warm up in Chicago.  I’m pretty minimalist when it comes to style, so I’m glad that these came pre-styled.  Now I just have to figure out how to accessorize them properly and there’s a good chance I’ll be wearing them all the time.

… and your favorite pair of jeans overall?

I fall on the curvy end of the spectrum.  I’m not plus-sized and yet I’m not always considered “normal” sized either.  I haven’t found one pair of designer jeans that has ever fit my body.  {Grrr.}  Two years ago I decided to check out, which has jeans starting at a size 12 and I fell in instant love.  Their jeans are made for curvy girls, so they’re properly proportioned.  I’ve tried on jeans in the past that would fit my thighs but then not fit over my butt.  Proportion is everything when you’re curvy and it is my experience that very few companies get it right.  The jeans at Torrid are not too low and they’re not too-high-mom jeans either.  They’re snug in all of the right places but I don’t feel like I’m trying to stuff myself into something not made for my body.

What about your dream pair?

My dream pair of jeans would definitely be any high-end denim that was truly made for curvy girls.  Why is there such a stigma with making denim that has a waist over a 32 or 33?  I know denim costs money and I would gladly pay extra money to have a pair of designer jeans that not only made my butt look good, but which I felt good about wearing.  The first brand that truly does that will win my heart forever.  I think the non super skinny girl market is a market that’s just waiting to be tapped.  {By the way – I know there’s a brand of denim made for bigger girls called Not Your Daughter’s Jeans but hello – I’m not a mom.  That would just be weird.)

What’s the hardest thing about finding jeans that work for you?

See the entire listing above.  Aside from and Gap, I feel like very few companies actually want me to wear their jeans.

If you had one personal tip for DD readers, what would it be?

Please don’t ever use the term “jeggings,” to describe denim leggings.  What an awful, awful word.
