Behind the Blues Interview Series: Andrea from SkinnyPurse

Andrea is a total joy and really full of knowledge about… well, about everything! Make sure to click the link below to check out her site after reading the interview. Enjoy!

You’ve been writing at SkinnyPurse for a few years now. What made you decide to start the blog and how has it evolved since its inception?

I started as a product review site a few years ago, and relaunched it as a fashion blog in May of 2009.  I had been working at a corporate job in marketing, then left to have a baby.  After my daughter turned 1 1/2, I started to feel like I needed a work outlet and decided to redesign and relaunch the site.  I love to shop online, and wanted to create a fashion and beauty web site for people who like to as well.

What is your favorite denim for a night out, and how would you style them?

For a night out, I have to say I love J Brand 10″ Ankle Skinny Jeans You can wear them with so much – from a killer pair of heels, blouse and jacket – to a pair of ankle boots, and drapey tank.  I love the silhouette of a skinny jean for a night out. The possibilities are endless. They are like a canvas – you can add whatever you want to the jeans to totally change up your outfit.

…and what is your favorite pair of jeans overall?

Well, right now, because I am 6-months pregnant, I am loving my Citizens Of Humanity Avedon Secret Fit Belly(tm) Slim Fit Slim Leg Maternity Jeans.  They are super stretchy and comfy (a must for maternity jeans), but have a great dark wash for a more polished look.  I love the skinny leg because it’s perfect for wearing longer tunics, sweaters, and tops to cover the baby bump.

Before I was pregnant, I was basically living in my AG Adriano Goldschmied Stilt Skinny Jeans and a pair of Prairie Underground Denim Leggings, made by a local company out of Seattle.  Both are comfortable and easy to pair with different tops and shoes. I love Jeggings, because they are so comfortable, but you can still get the denim look.  Comfort and ease are essential when chasing around a toddler!

What was your first pair of premium denim (if you remember)?

I think they were 7 For All Mankind – Bootcut Long in New York Dark. I’ve worn them to death but they still are a great basic boot cut, a shape that will never go out of style.  I also had a couple pairs of
Citizens of Humanity Kelly Boot Cut Jeans
– one hemmed shorter to wear with flats and one longer for heels.

You’re a great sale shopper. Have you gotten any crazy deals on jeans (and if so, what were they)?

I am a big fan of the sample sale sites, which I know Denim Debutante is as well! I just found a great pair of People’s Liberation “Belle” Skinny Leg Jean for $49 on Rue La La. (I can’t find a picture of the skinny jeans  - only the boot cut version) I won’t be able to wear them for months, but I couldn’t pass up the deal. I’ve also found great sales online at boutiques like CoutureCandy &

What is your dream pair of denim (if it exists, share that. If not, tell us what it would look like)?

Since I am on the maternity bandwagon, I would have to say my dream pair of maternity denim would be a jean whose waistband does fall down.  There are plenty of maternity styles to choose from – under-the-belly, mid-belly and over-the-belly, but I have yet to find a pair that truly works with a growing belly. So, figure that out and I would be a buying customer!

If you had one personal tip for DD readers, what would it be?

I think some of your other interviewees have mentioned this, but I will reiterate because it’s a great tip: If you try on a pair of jeans at a boutique and fall in love – hold off on buying until you try a search online.  Often you can find deals on designer denim online that are not offered in stores.

Also, to help your designer denim last, make sure to wash inside out, in cold, and hang dry.
