Behind the Blues Interview Series: Lorna from Denim Blog

by Jaime on April 19, 2010

I’ve become so inspired by reading these interviews… not only because each person has such a different take on denim, but because I get to actually learn how they started caring about denim (and then I get to share it with you). Hardcore denim lovers probably already know who Lorna is – after all, she’s the editor of one of the biggest denim blogs out there – but here’s your chance to get to really know her. Enjoy!

How did you start writing at DenimBlog, and what’s your favorite part about it?

I originally was a moderator on HonestForum (the forum which is part of DenimBlog) for over a year and I had a huge interest in denim. The owner of HonestForum asked me to start writing for DenimBlog. I loved writing for it and then things took off from there :) But it’s down to my huge passion for denim which I have had for years! Denim is just so versatile and such a huge part of the fashion world.

My favourite part about writing for DenimBlog would be meeting all of the people behind the brands. I get to meet a lot of the denim designers and they are all so lovely! I am really lucky to have developed a good friendship with Paige Adams-Geller. So definitely the meeting new people who share my passion would be the best part but I also love writing and I get so excited when I see a celeb in a new pair of jeans that are really hot! I just have to blog it and share it with the readers :)

If you can pick – I know it’ll be hard – what is your favorite pair of jeans overall?

Oh goodness, this is a hard one! This is very difficult to pick because I have and love so many jeans for so many different reasons. I’m a huge fan of the denim leggings but I think if I could pick one jean out of them all then the Dylan George Lucy jeans in Czar will be it. The reason is because I have worn those the most and they are just one of my go to jeans and they are so pretty! But it’s definitely a close call between those and some others.

What about your dream pair?

This is such a tough one! I do own most of the jeans that I have on my wish list so it would probably be a pair from Balmain. I would never be able to afford the Balmain price tag so it would be amazing to own a pair one day!

If I could invent one myself I would love Diesel Matic 61X, they never brought 61X out in the Matic cut which made me really sad :( It has to be the old 81M style Matic fit though, that was the best! Super skinny and really comfy. So Diesel, please bring out this jean!!

Do you notice any differences between UK and US denim trends (and if so, what are they)?

I do! There are definitely a lot of differences between the two countries. From what I see on DenimBlog and on the celebrities, premium denim really seems to be a lot bigger in the US than it does in the UK. LA mainly and NY, there is so much premium denim there! The trends vary as well, we seem to get them at different times. Shorts and tights were a hot trend over here about 2 years ago but they recently came in last season in the US so the trends go to and from each country :) It does depend where you go though. In London there is a lot more premium denim than down south where I live but definitely not as much as in LA. I guess I mix my style between both, I’m always seeing what’s hot in the US right now and then I combine it with what is hot over here :) If you want to see the clothes/trends I wear then you can visit my new personal blog, Raindrops of Sapphire.

What was your first pair of designer denim (if you remember)?

Unfortunately my first pair ended up being a fake pair of Rock & Republic Roth jeans. I had no idea they were fake and that’s when I found HonestForum and found out. Then my very first pair of authentic premium denim was a pair of Rock & Republic Fuchsia Crowns in Addict wash. I loved those! The picture was taken late 2006 early 2007. It’s strange to think that all of this has happened due to finding out I got stuck with a fake pair of jeans, haha! Since then I gained such an addiction to denim my collection just keeps growing! It’d ridiculous!

You collaborated with Prima Jeans to design a pair just for you. What was the best part?

Oh it was so much fun!! It was a really really long process as I don’t live in LA so everything had to be done online via email etc so I never got to experience it in real life but I had the greatest time. I don’t know what the best part was, it was all so surreal. It still feels like it never happened. I got to design the entire jean, the cut, measurements, fabric, wash, buttons, rivets, pocket lining, ankle zips, aesthetics etc so I know it’s a bit of a broad answer but the whole design process was my favourite part about it all. Prima Jeans are such a lovely company, they are so friendly! I can’t thank them enough for that opportunity :) You can see the jeans here.

If you had one personal tip for DD readers, what would it be?

Always wear jeans that flatter your figure! If a trend doesn’t suit your body shape then don’t buy into it, try making the trend work some other way. The key to great denim and looking good in your denim is to wear something really flattering, it makes you feel confident so that you wear the jeans and they don’t wear you!
