Behind the Blues Interview Series: Kathy from Denim Therapy

by Jaime on April 23, 2010

Kathy is one of those women who you wish you could be. In every picture I’ve ever seen of her, she’s impeccably dressed, perfectly accessorized and usually doing something impossibly chic. Normally, this leads you to either jealousy or hatred… but she’s just too nice for either. A wealth of knowledge when it comes to denim and a wit that comes across perfectly when she’s writing, Kathy is an unbeatable resource for denim (even if we are a little envious of her wardrobe).

You’re known primarily for your blogging at Denim Therapy (at least, in the circles we run in). How did you end up there, and what is your favorite part about the job?

In my former life, I worked in television PR, Corporate Communications, Advertising, Branding and Special Events. But it seems I was always happiest when I was able to express myself through writing and doing something creative. So I finally decided to go for it a couple of years ago and launch a writing career. I stumbled across Denim Therapy on Craigslist, and the rest is history.

What is one brand that’s doing it right, and what sets them apart?

I hate to single out one brand because it’s fairly subjective. As you know, there’s a pair of jeans for everyone out there. But… from the top of my head, I keep thinking about J Brand and Acne Jeans. Sorry, that’s two. Both brands have solid core styles that are built on clean lines and classic tailoring. They are successful because they have managed to also stay fresh and relevant, especially with their recent collabs with Hussein Chalayan and Lanvin, respectively.

. . and what is your favorite pair of jeans overall?

You put me in a difficult position! Currently, I’m really digging my Hudson Skinny jeans. They fit me perfectly! I didn’t have to hem them and they make me look tone, haha. Hudson Jeans usually gives my body a boost, if you get my drift.

What was your first pair of premium denim (if you remember)?

Premium denim? I think they were Joe’s Jeans. I also remember I bought a couple of J Crew jeans in Japanese ringspun denim with chainstitching around the same time. I just fell in love with the quality of the denim and the detailing that went into those jeans.

Any denim trends you love this season? How about ones you hate?

I like jeggings but I’m not a fan of the mixed denim and stretch fabric thing or the moto jean, especially if they look patched together.

What is your dream pair of denim (if it exists, share that. If not, tell us what it would look like)?

My dream pair would be a 31″ inseam straight leg which is slightly high-waisted (I have a long torso), about 10″ rise in the back, deep indigo selvedge with silk or something super soft woven into it. It would be heavier denim, without losing softness, and the denim would be embedded with waterproofing technology. Hems are chainstitched, of course.

If you had one personal tip for DD readers, what would it be?

Shop for your ideal fit and style first, before looking at the labels. We can get too caught up on brands or what is the “popular” jean to wear and end up with jeans that don’t look quite right. Trust your instincts. If you don’t feel right in those trendy jeans, then move on. There’s plenty of jeans out there. Like I said, there’s a pair of jeans for everyone out there.
