How to: Style Denim Leggings

by Jaime on February 17, 2010

The fabulous (and lucky) Erin, who won the pair of Robb and Hugo denim leggings on this site, was wondering what to wear with them. After all, you can’t just wear them the same way you wear your standard jeans, right?

Well, yes and no. Here are a few of my main options for styling this ever-so-popular trend.

Styling: Denim Leggings (Option #1)
Outfit #1: Keep it Simple. Tunics are great to wear with denim leggings (I’m sorry, I still can’t call them Jeggings. I can’t do it.), and paired with some lighter ankle boots, you’re pretty much good to go. Everything on top of that is just gravy.

Bonus Tip: Find a tunic that has some kind of waist definition. Sure, you can throw on a waist belt, but it’s more flattering to keep the clean lines of a fitted top.

Styling Denim Leggings (Outfit #2)

Outfit #2: Get a little 80′s. Denim leggings are really a throwback fashion staple, and hey… if you’re going to try one, why not try them all? Once again, we’re keeping with a tunic, but adding some edgier moto-flare to the style. Finish off the look with a bright polish (and possibly a bright lip), and you’ll look like a true-blue rockstar.

Bonus Tip: Charley 5.0 makes some great acid wash denim leggings. Definitely a brand worth checking out!

Styling: Denim Leggings (Outfit #3)
Outfit #3: Retro-sexy. From the olive tones to the safari-glam (can we call it a glam-fari?) tunic, this outfit has all the makings of a 70′s sexpot. I can just envision Farrah Fawcett wearing it.
Bonus Tip: Don’t be afraid to add some color to your wardrobe via nail polish. It’s one of my favorite accessories!

Styling: Denim Leggings (Outfit #4)
Outfit #4: Go girly.Maybe I created this outfit around the shoes (oh, sue me. They’re the best thing I’ve ever seen from Elizabeth and James EVER.), but the point is simple. Dress girly, feel feminine. Hey, we all could use a little pep in our step… and there’s nothing wrong with needing a pair of teal heels to help you out.
Bonus Tip: Avoid pairing a dress with leggings. It tends to look frumpy and creates the illusion of a too-long torso. A tunic that goes just below your tush is ideal.

Hope this helps you out, Erin! There’s a reason that I love denim leggings; they’re comfortable and versatile pieces of clothing that can translate into multiple style options!

Love,
JP
