Denim Pair Review: Hudson's "Denim Leggings"

by Jaime on September 22, 2009

I’m not sexy enough to writhe around like Georgia May Jagger in a pair of Hudson jeans. It’s just not my way. So, when I say that these denim leggings make me feel hot, you know I’m saying something big.

But, there’s a catch (well, sort of): these are not jeans. Wait, let me repeat that…

These are NOT jeans.

The best way I can represent them is as a heavier cotton/spandex blend (90% cotton/10% spandex) with a denim-style silhouette. But, you know what? Hudson really got this trend right. It really, REALLY works. Unlike the Rock & Republic super spandex-y leggings (or the hideous Niki Biki ones as well… both are a polyester/spandex blend, if my memory serves me), the Collin Skinny Legging with Flap Pockets (yes, that’s their official name) has enough heft to the fabric to help prevent that saddlebagging look.

They’re out now (in a VERY limited quanity; the only place I’ve found them that isn’t waitlisted is shopbop.com) and are retailing at $154. Is that a high price? Sure. Would I pay that? If I hadn’t been able to wear them beforehand, I would’ve said no. Now, I’m not so sure. When you find a pair of pants that look dressy enough to wear out but feel like sweatpants, that’s something to really hold on to. I wore them at work on Friday (all day long, as usually is the case with work) and the strangest thing happened: my boss asked me if I knew that Fridays were casual. Because I looked dressed up.

Um.. yeah. I felt like I hadn’t gotten out of my pajamas.

For those of you who are concerned with how to wear them: honestly, they can pretty much be styled as you would with regular denim. If you’re feeling a bit more modest (as I did. It was work, after all!), pair it with a tunic and some heels. I went for a black/gray look with an Alternative Apparel burnout tunic in gray over my favorite white Vince Muscle tank (yeah, so now you can tell how it is that I felt pajama-fied!). Because they’re black, they can work with any color you want to go with. I’m pretty sure I would’ve named them “Ridiculously Versatile Denim Leggings”. And yes, I know there are no photos up of me in these (though the darling Jelena (@JelenaWoehr on twitter) can verify that they’re in my possession. And they’ll be making an OotD appearance hopefully this weekend. I want you all to see them!

I can’t really put into words how exciting it was for me to snag these. Thanks SO much to Hudson UK for shipping them my way. As for you guys, go snag your own pair now at shopbop.com! They run True to Size, and are a 32″ inseam with an 8.5″ front rise.

Love,
JP

I was shopping the other day and saw Obey denim leggings too-I was intrigued but didn't have time to throw on a pair to see how they'd look. Glad to hear they look awesome on you!

See, I feel the same way about jeggings as you do, specifically this line. I’m no model either but man I feel hot when I wear these pants!

I do love the leggings. Hudson makes nice jeans to begin with.
