Arbonne Made in the Shade Self-Tanner Review (and Giveaway!)

Me and self-tanners have had a rocky relationship. When I was younger, I always used to tan like crazy... probably part of being young and always being outside. But as I got older, I've found that I just don't tan as easily.

Okay, maybe I'm not outside as much, that's true. But instead of tanning on my face, now I just freckle up. I don't want to get sun damage either... and it's hard to avoid here in Colorado, even with the highest of SPF.

So, when Angie contacted me asking if I'd be interested in trying Arbonne's Made in the Shade Self-Tanner, I had mixed emotions. What if it ended up like the time I used that Neutrogena spray and I looked like an orange zebra? Or the Bain de Soleil, which I liked but always seemed to go through a huge quantity of just to get the coloring I wanted... and it really wasn't cheap to begin with? And, on the other hand, I was sick of rivaling Nicole Kidman in the race to the pale. I wasn't going to go to a tanning booth (did that in college, and not only was it expensive, it just zapped the crap out of my skin!), but catching the rare rays outside just didn't seem to be cutting it either.

First off, let me tell you how ridiculously impressed I am with Angie. Her organization is insane. Since I was testing out this product, I wanted to learn more about the company... she sent me a couple samples along with my tester of Made in the Shade, along with a booklet of the Arbonne lines. She took time to put tabs all throughout the book where information about the brand, the items I'd been given, and the lines of those specific items were located. Oh, and a key on the back of the pretty note she sent me. I was in awe.

So, I figured that I'd probably like this stuff... after all, if she spent all this time on me, it probably was for good reason. Maybe I'm daring, but I decided to try it the first night...

...on my face. Luckily for me, it ended up great. It's got a decent smell (nothing spectacular, but totally not offensive), SPF 15 (which is perfect for a freckle-face like me)... and it looks natural. Here's the example: first picture is of my legs just normal. No color, no sun, etc.

Second is after one application of the Made in the Shade:

It's subtle (and really, the flashiness doesn't help!), but I can tell the difference. And, there's something so amazing about being able to build the color to the level I want to achieve, instead of trying to scrub off orange streaks.... and it doesn't take a ton of it to get color. Just a few pumps of it takes care of business. I really, really like the stuff.

Alright, now the point you've all been waiting for: how to win your very own bottle of Arbonne's Made in the Shade!

I just got married on June 19th but we had to put off our honeymoon until the beginning of September due to a variety of reasons. We're going to Orlando to stay at the Vero Beach resort! Trouble is that I'm naturally a bright pasty white and would love to darken up a bit to get sexified for the honeymoon. This sounds like a perfect solution! Thanks for the review and the chance to test it out. :)

WInning this self tanner would be the answer to my prayers because for over a year now i've been searching high and low for the perfect self-tanner.The only bit of color i get is freckles on my face even in the sunniest of months. I"m tired of having all my friends be bronzed and beautiful all year round (in wisconsin, are you KIDDING ME!?!) while i'm lookin' like casper over here.

I would love to win this! I also gave up the tanning beds(why does it take us so long to realize how bad they are?) and being allergic to the sun (hives galore - It looks like I was attacked by a pack of mosquitos) it is hard to get any color. Thanks for the great review!

Oh hey, I didn't even realize I was starting to enter, haha. I've already RT'd it once today.

Definitely blogging about this, with the whole tanning bed scare and everything in the news right now. Couldn't come at a more perfect time!

So why do I want this? Um, because I look MUCH better with a tan than I do when I'm pale. Being part Choctaw doesn't necessarily lend itself to looking cute as a pale girl, haha. And I'm always on the lookout for good self-tanners!

Picasso had a blue period. And a red period. This summer I'm rolling like Picasso-- I've claimed this season my white period. But there's really no reason to sugar coat anything: I'm pale. Pasty, even.
In acts of desperation I've gone through bottles of sunless tanner and cakes of bronzer. Streak upon streak, and dollar after dollar later I'm still pale. At this point, you're probably wondering why I don't go lay in the sun or chill by the pool. Well, friends, I had tonsillitis in June. The antibiotics I had to take (for about a month) made me highly allergic to sun. And by highly allergic, I mean my skin turned purple, splochy and burned. Not exactly the look I was going for in developing an early summer base tan.
So, Why do I need this sunless tanner? To help me reclaim with my sunkissed hotness and thrust me into an end-of-summer Bronze Period.

--Great giveaway Jaime! Love the blog :)

I would love this tanner! I am sooo pale and even though "pale is the new tan"... I'd rather not be in the summer! Please send me that bronzing goodness so I don't blind you all in my short shorts! :)

Oh Boy - My skin is so white it's transparent! I burn in natural sun only to have it peel back into white. I definitely need some sunless tanning to at least give people the appreance that I have left my house and spent some time in the sun

I need a good tan. My legs do not tan like the rest of me. I tried a different self tanner last month and ended up going to Cabo looking like an orange lobster! It was quite embarassing. My kids are now at the age that they enjoy going to the beach and I have to take them. I want to be the cool mom in a cute suit with a NICE tan. Thanks for the chance and JP I have no one to bug with my taunting questions over there at RTC, miss talking with you.
Thanks, Brenna

Hey Jamie! Just subscribed to your blog! I would love to win this self-tanner because I just read an article about how the risk of skin cancer jumps to 75% if using tanning beds before the age of 30! I have been fighting my urge to tan this summer and searching for a new, safer way to get a sun-kissed glow! Thanks!

I'd love to try this self-tanner because I'm a super pale gal--always have been, even back in summer camp when i hated wearing sunscreen yet still received the nickname 'Casper' for my pallor. And I've tried a couple but have not enjoyed scrubbing at orange streaks down my legs.

I would like to try this tanner simply because my skin is lily-white, I have never tanned in my life, and the way you make it sound in this post, this one doesn't sound as difficult to control as most self-tanners. I have always wondered how I would look with a tan, but have not tried a self-tanner because, frankly, I'm afraid that I'll do it wrong. I'm terrified that I'll end up all orange, streaky, and dirty-looking! This one sounds as though it might be a little subtler than many others that I have read about.

Lizzie said...

I need this tanner because I am SO PALE. The amount of pool time I'm getting this summer is not doing the job to get me tan and a self-tanner will be so much better on my skin anyway!

I would love to win this self tanner. I have fair skin and I live in Florida. It is always so hot and there is a lot of pressure to be tan 24/7. I know how dangerous the sun rays can be and would love to discover a great sunless tanner.

I would like to try out the product because I want to try something that I would normally never try. My skin flat out burns in the sun, so I always have to wear a high spf sunblock. Anytime someone around me complains about being pale, they're at least 3 shades darker than me. Being so pale, I have always been afriad to try tanning products because of the fear that I would look unnatural. I don't want to test out a bunch of products, wasting both money and time, to turn orange. Without an incentive, I have simply endured the neverending critisism of my peers.
