Denim Review: Earnest Sewn

by Jaime on June 8, 2009

When you have the money, you don’t need to flaunt it.

I know, tell that to Paris Hilton. But, still. The best jeans (and the ones worn most by the celebutantes, fashionistas and the like) are the most basic. This brand is part of that exclusive club.

What is Earnest Sewn?

Best way to describe something is through one’s own words. Here’s what was said on their website:

Earnest Sewn is a denim brand that sets itself apart by consistency in concept and strong lifestyle identity, as well as our overwhelming commitment to product quality and brand. Our concept lies in the idea of mixing the Japanese beauty aesthetic of Wabi-Sabi, with denim’s Americana past. Designed and launched by the former co-founder/designer of Paper Denim & Cloth, Scott Morrison, the Earnest Sewn design principle is literally translated as ‘product sewn in earnest’. In staying true to this we incorporate pride in workmanship and commitment to authenticity. The production of each garment is overseen by three people, and they monitor it’s progress from start to finish, at every stage: design, sewing, and wash.

We avoid as much of the standard ‘assembly line’ manufacturing process as possible, reserving some operations to specialists, but wherever possible, allowing one sewer to complete the majority of the garment. Additionally, the wash process incorporates hand-drawn techniques ensuring that no two pair are alike. The three people overseeing each pair’s production, along with the president and designer Scott Morrison, hand stamp the jean after each step of the process is complete. By signing our names we are committing our reputation to the product and validating it’s authenticity and quality. Every pair sewn in earnest.

Those fortunate enough to find a pair of Earnest Sewn in their local retailer will have found a line of denim and denim related products that reflect an unprecedented commitment to quality and individual style. They’ll also find an unwavering appreciation for denim and the fading mystique of American ingenuity and craftsmanship. Each piece of Earnest Sewn is handcrafted to perfection, the end result, an obvious by product of our obsession.

In my personal experience (and this follows for both their Men’s and Women’s lines), the delicate process of creating a beautiful pair of jeans is something that is an artform. I don’t need my ass embroidered with your brand’s name (yes, I’m looking at you, Ed Hardy/Christian Audigier). I want a well-made, great fitting pair of jeans… and Earnest Sewn pulls that off flawlessly.

Well, almost flawlessly. There is one slight hitch; sizing. It’s not that it’s off like crazy, but it isn’t particularly concise, and tends to change from style to style. My pair of Keaton’s? A bit snug at a 26 (ie: they fit me like Paige Premium Denim). Most of their women’s styles run as such.

Men’s? C.’s pair of Hemingways fit him super large at the 30. He wears a solid 30 in most of his jeans… these, he was swimming in.

Pay attention to what you want out of your jeans. If you like the flashier look, Earnest Sewn is not the brand for you. But for strong, quality denim with some amazing washes? These are spectacular.

I’m a huge proponent of the “you get what you pay for” mentality… especially when it comes to denim. If it’s worth it to have a great fit and a great look, then these are worth your money… especially if you can get them massively discounted on SmartBargains, like I did.

Hi, do you happen to own the decca straight leg in a dark wash? Do you know how that sizing runs? Also, do earnest sewn tend to keep their shape or stretch out (therefore making it better to size down)?

Thanks so much!
